Background: Medical treatment has been shown to be an effective treatment for organic erectile dysfunction (ED), but effectiveness of psychogenic ED treatment was unknown in Taiwan.
Results: The subjects were 34.1 years of age on average, 7.6 years of ED duration, 60% were primary ED and 48% were seeking for otherwise treated before for CBT intervention. The common causes of psychogenic ED were myth assumes that masturbate frequently would cause ED, preference anxiety, and relationship problem. There was a significant improvement in erectile function after the course (IIEF: 13.48 ± 4.95 → 19.20 ± 4.19, p <.001). Improvement rate of ED severity was 80%. Compared to primary ED group, secondary ED group had no difference in age, pre-IIEF score, and improvement rate of ED severity, but shorter ED duration and better outcome of improvement in IIEF-5 (2.7 years: 10.1 years, p = .010; 9.3: 3.3 , p = .008). Linear regression analysis showed that younger age and primary ED were independently related to greater improvement in erectile function (β = -. 606, -.756, p <.01, R2 = .622).
Conclusion: CBT is an effective treatment for psychogenic ED. Subjects with secondary ED and younger age have better improvement efficacy.
